Media Report

My research has helped me with my pre-production because due to it I was able to tell who my target audience was and what they would like to see in my music video. My music video will be aimed at mainly girls (because 72.73% of people who answered my questionnaire were females), aged from 14 to 17 years old (100% of people who answer my questionnaire were aged between 14 to 17) and students (all of the 22 people who I got a responses from stated that they are students). It will also be aimed at people who enjoy listening to meaningful, story telling and old rock music (the highest percentage of people 54.55% who answered my questionnaire stated that rock music is their favourite genre of music) and people who have enough spare time to watch a music video instead of just listening to the audio of it (21 of 22 people who answered my questionnaire have no job and 22/22 are students therefore they have some spare time to do that. Furthermore, young people/teenagers listen to music through their head phones on buses and locations like that all the time. Even equipment like earphones are advertised for teenagers because there is a stereotype which states that teenagers listen to music all the time).
The research has also helped me with deciding what genre of music I should do and what specific codes and conventions I should include (due to knowing that most people like rock music, I am allowed to include dark clothing, gloomy surroundings and low key and gloomy lighting and these things are some of the codes and conventions and iconography of rock music). Due to all the information provided by 22 people through filling in my questionnaire, I was able to produce a story line for a storyboard which fits my specific target audience (the story line of my music video will follow the music's lyric). That makes the production of my music video a lot easier and organised.
My video will include a storyline which will follow the music video because most people (45.45% of people through filling in my questionnaire stated that they prefer music videos which follow the story line of the song). The main character in my music video will be a female because 16 people out of 22 who answered my questionnaire were females. Therefore, I want most of the females to be able to relate to the actress in the video and escape to their own little world. The questionnaire responses that I got illustrate that a high percentage of people also like creative music videos (27.27%). To appeal to my target audience I will try to be as creative as possible while producing my music video and I will achieve that by using interesting locations, camera angles, camera shots and creatives story line.
After trying to film my music video I have changed my mind and instead of doing a usual type of video I've decided to create a stop motion music video. I have decided to do that to add some more creativity to my whole production. Furthermore, I thought that would add an effect to the song I'm using (Metallica- Fade To Black) because the song I'm using has a good beat to it and is quite slow.

Textual analysis- Coursework

My media choice-
I've decided to produce a music video for a rock song about love. The video will be mostly happy. However, a death will occur in the video and that can make the video quite depressing for some of the viewers. I will try to make the video as creative and original as possible. Furthermore, I will also include cute and depressing parts because that's what my target audience likes. Stereotypically females love romantic, emotional and depressing at parts movies and videos and that's why I will include both cute and depressing parts in my video.

What the video will be about-
The video is about a couple who are in love. They go through a lot of fun in their life. There is a blue haired character which is meant to illustrate their love and happiness. There will also be a dancing female who will dance to illustrate happiness and sadness throughout the video. Furthermore, at some point of the video the male actress will die and with his death the blue haired actress's hair will go short and brown; that should portray to the viewer that the male character is dead and that her blue hair represented their love. The video will also portray a lot of nature shots like fields etc. At the end of the video the main character who is a female and now a grown up woman will illustrate to the viewer that she is happy with the way her life is and she still hasn't found anyone else.

My target audience and strategies how I will meet their needs-
My music video will be aimed at mainly girls (because most girls answered my questionnaire), aged from 14 to 17 years old, middle class, students and all religions. People who enjoy listening to good rock music, people who have enough spare time to watch a music video instead of just listening to the audio of it. It will also be aimed at people who like to watch videos with a lot of nature shots. People who find joy from other people's happiness.
My video will include a happy, exciting, cute and creative story line which will appeal to the female target audience (especially the cute parts of it) because stereotypically girls like cute stories and objects. I will also try to include attractive looking actors/actresses to appeal to the female target audience because girls enjoy seeing and looking at attractive men. I will not only include attractive looking male/s but also attractive looking female/s. I want my target audience to be able to relate to the video and maybe even imagine themselves being in the video/being the actress.
I will try to pick a song with a story line about love because that's what stereotypically girls really enjoy to watch (that is what my questionnaire portrays). I want them to be able to escape to their own little world by watching my music video.
The questionnaire responses that I got illustrate that most people like creative music videos. To appeal to my target audience I will try to be as creative as possible while producing my music video.

I've decided to do a creative and original Rock music video for my coursework. The music video will not be depressing, it will be happy, exciting, creative and cute because that's what some of my target audience showed to like through filling in my questionnaire. However, I will try to make it emotional at the same time (by for example including one or two sad scenes) without making it depressing and still keeping it happy because most people said that they like emotional music videos (people who answered my questionnaire).

The video will be about growing up. It will portray at least 3 stages of certain periods in life (childhood, teenage years and adulthood). I want to convince the target audience that if they believe in something (for example their dreams) they will be able to achieve it at some point of their life. The video will follow the storyline because my questionnaire illustrates that is what people that filled it in/my target audience likes. The video will be about a couple who knew each other for most of their life and they grew up with each other. The video will mostly show a lot of positive things they went through together. Around half way through the video (when the male is around 19 years old) the male will die. Later in the video the female will find happiness again through dancing (in her teenage years). When the woman grows up she will not be in a new relationship to show that she stayed really 'loyal' to her loved one.

Representation task 1-

Class- Magazine- Vogue represents upper and middle class (Vogue is a rich and posh magazine. Vogue is aimed at middle and upper class people (B and A) because in those classes people are interested in fashion and are actually able to afford buying things from that magazine. Vogue usually contains products which are expensive and on top. Furthermore, very famous celebrities are used which could suggest that the magazine is famous, respected and quite expensive. Vogue is also for people who know celebrities, expensive brands and actually are interested in fashion. Lower classes have no time to focus on fashion and that kind of aspects because they are too busy working etc.). That is proven by the use of rich, cold and calm colours which look  sophisticated, rich and posh. Furthermore, the use of very famous actors/models illustrates that the the creators/publisher of the magazine has a lot of money to give out which illuminates that it is higher class because it has the money.
Age- Film- (HTTYD is aimed at younger audience, children to teenagers (aged between 8 to 17). It is animated which once again suggests that the film was created for younger audience. Furthermore, the story line is about a young boy who becomes friends with a dragon. For many children that might be a dream come true. Adults do not believe in dragons while children do and therefore adults will not be interested in the movie.) In HTTYD the main character is portrayed as a troubled teenager/older child. The movie shows struggles which most teenagers go through (like for example fighting with parents, not getting along with peers and other little things like that). The male character is portrayed quite stereotypical for his age.

Gender- TV show- Supernatural represents males as quite manly, fearless and full of humour (that is quite stereotypical for many males). They wear leather jackets which highlights how manly they are. Leather jackets have a connotation with motorbikes and motorbikes are stereotypical for men.

Race- TV show-

Analysing magazine front cover- Men's Health

Red recognisable logo of the magazine's name. The masthead is the boldest thing on the front cover. It is in the biggest font and the brightest colour. Red has a connotation of danger and action; action is usually associated with men. The masthead is also behind the actors head and it is still recognisable. Famous brands are able to do that because people know them and recognise them.
The target audience for this magazine is middle class to rich men (class B and A), ages from 25 to 45 years old. The cover contains a male character the audience can idolise and find personal identity with. Another point which suggests that the target audience is males is the choices of colours. The magazine is quite calm, cold and simple in turn of colour choices and the colours used here are stereotypically attached to men. Even though the magazine's main target audience is males, it does have some niche audience like for example women. Women would be interested in buying this magazine because they might find Hemsworth attractive and would like to gain information about him.
Celebrity which has a built body used on the front cover to attract the audience. The audience does not only idolise Hemsworth but they might also want to find some personal identity with him. Audience might believe that if they buy the magazine they will be just like Hemsworth and will have an attachment with him. Furthermore, through putting a celebrity on the front cover the audience trusts the magazine more people famous people have a status. The way Hemsworth poses illuminates that the magazine is targeted at men because he is not posing in a sexual way to attract females, he is posing in a way to show off his muscles and to gain respect from the males.
The cover lines/puffs attract the target audience by informing them and attracting them about secrets on flat belly. They also attract target audience with the topics on sex. Most people between 25-45 have sex and that appeals tot he target audience.

Margin Call-analysis

                                            Analysis

Establishing shots which illustrates the surrounding. Furthermore, it also illustrates to the viewer/audience what the video/drama/film is going to be about.
This mid shot illuminates to the viewer that the situation in the office isn't too good. The man's facial expression comes across as quite frustrated and angry. There are computers in the shot which are part of the Mise-en-Scene.

Pan from the female character through the office. That allows the viewer/audience to see/get to know the surrounding the scene is happening in. Furthermore, the lighting seems quite dull and blues are overtaking. The use of cold colours has a negative colour connotation. Blue is cold and dark colours can symbolise mean and evil.
Over the shoulder shot portrays to the audience/viewers that a conversation between a man and two women is going on. Furthermore, the business wear (which is also part of the Mise-en-Scene) illuminates that the meeting is quite serious. This shot is also a mid shot and it portrays the female's emotions

George Ezra- Blame it on me

                                   Analysis of the video-

At the beginning of the video there's an old man who looks quite silly who tells the singer not to follow the 'yellow brick road' (the scene is presented with a mid-close up shot). There's also (direct) mode of address used by the old man who stares at the camera in turn looking into the audience's eyes and talking to them. That makes the audience feel involved because it looks like the old man is looking straight at them. The singer doesn't listen to the man (I believe that not many people would due to the costume/clothing he is wearing). The clothing does make the man look a bit silly and childish. However, the grey hair and beard make him look wise and that could make some people (or audience) listen to his warning. The warning in the video prepares people for something interesting (negative or positive) to happen. It warns the audience and foreshadows that something negative probably will happen because the old man is making sure that the singer really agrees to his decision of following the 'yellow brick road'.

The title screen states 'Blame it on me'. However, the singer is looking and walking away from the screen and is faced backwards to the camera which could portray that he doesn't really want to take the blame which suggests that he is going against what he's saying. The title screen is also quite intriguing because it grabs the audience's mind with 'blame it on me'. The audience for sure wants to know what the blame is; that will make them continue watching the video. This once again is a mid shot, it is also a dolly shot because he is followed by the camera.

Over the shoulder shot portrays a happy child after attacking the singer with a toy. That could be a visual metaphor (the child being life and the singer a normal human). The lighting becomes soft lighting in this shot and he background becomes darker which could signify the negative thing that just happened to the singer and it could also signify that the child is evil/mean.

There's a bird's eye view shot at 0:55 seconds in the music video.
